Just stick smiley faces on it? (September 2007)
A student continues to present a question and I felt I was not successfully answering it.
So over the past few weeks, I’ve allowed my subconscious mind to go to work on it.
The question is: why can’t I do things I don’t like and just think positive? She had been stuck on this issue for some time and no matter how I answered it, I wasn’t able to hit the nail on the head. I would always just say: “Why would you want to do things that don’t please you?” I just couldn’t understand it.
Then I awoke up today and a broader perspective is coming to me.
I am including an excerpt of the e-mail I sent her this morning:
Dear awesome student,
I believe we each have a divine plan for our lives. I could be wrong on this (or anything for that matter!).
I believe we find that plan by flowing downstream/listening to our emotional guidance system. When we don’t flow downstream, we can attract all kinds of problems: unhappiness, illness, poor relationships, financial lack, etc.
When I was 5, I lined up the little kids in the driveway and gave them ballet class.
I've pretty much continued to do that for the past 95 years.
Yes, I could have become a plumber, and put happy smiley faces on that.
But think about the destinies of all the people I've taught over the years and the ripple effect.
I've heard that if everyone allowed themselves to be happy and did the things that pleased them, we would have peace on earth, no illness, and happiness everywhere.
So this is no small question that you ask...."Why can't I just do what I dislike/detest and think positive?"
It would in effect alter the destiny of all of us, wouldn't it?
You have a purpose here. If you are a rose, and you keep trying to be a dandelion, you cannot survive. Why not just be what you were made to be? You will know what that is by following your emotional guidance system. "If it feels good it's right; if it feels bad, it's wrong!" Don’t get overwhelmed with this; we do it in little ways all day long. Do I want Chinese for lunch or Italian? Do I want to wear red or black? Do I want to take that art class or a Feng Shui class? You see what I mean? These little tiny choices start to add up to on big picture: Your Dream Life.
Flowing downstream is the answer. Remember Abe says: Upstream has nothing that you want.
So I believe it’s critical, one baby step at a time, to honor the divinity that resides within us-- (remember Namaste?) and support that kernel that was placed within each of us at birth. We nurture that in any small way we can, until, here I am way past the age of 5 with all those little kids lined up in the driveway, but with lots of big kids lined up everywhere and each of us having lots and lots of fun!!
Affirm often: There is a divine and perfect plan for my life and I call upon that plan now!
Sincerely, Joni
